About DAI

Founded by Dolores Sandoval in 2006, today The DaCosta-Angélique Institute (DAI) continues to find ways to sustain Dolores’ vision. Originally set up as an African-Canadian think tank, its mandate was to bring all peoples of all cultures together who care to foster intellectual growth, openness, and passionate engagement about the history, present and future of Canadian society. In keeping with her lifelong mission, Dolores believed that the influences from the African Diaspora, which touch all shores, must be recognized and celebrated even north of the 49th. Despite her death, DAI will continue to find the means to fund future research incentives, and open avenues for information dissemination, discussion, and culturally interactive activities.

Dr. Dolores Sandoval

On December 30, 2015 at Verdun Hospital in Montreal, Canada, after a battle with lung cancer, Dolores Sandoval passed away. While born in Montreal, for 28 years she had taught at the University of Vermont, retiring as Associate Professor Emerita of Education & former Assistant to the President for Human Resources.

She left her mark on Vermont, running twice against Bernie Sanders, making her the first African American to run for federal office in that state. In 1999, she retired to Montreal where she taught at McGill University and kept active with educational and social activities, including a stint as Past President of the venerable St. James Literary Society. Once in Montreal, Dr. Sandoval reconnected with her family legacy at the Union United Church, and through the Little Burgundy community.
